Building Making, Sem VI

The 'building making' course took the previous design from localisations:design & detail module to further articulate detailed development stages for the built form through technical resolution of structural systems, material performance and experience, threshold and fenestration details and process of construction. Further, it allowed to bridge the gap between the design from concept to actualization and generate a construction documentation set along with specifications, quantities, estimation and putting together different materials and their assemblies in a manner that is conceptually coherent with the overall idea of the building.

SITE

The site for this study is located in P/S Ward of Mumbai in Goregaon (E) adjacent to

Goregaon (E) metro station, locally known as Bimbisar Nagar. This nagar houses people

who earlier lived in Dharavi but were relocated back in 1980s in these ‘transit” MHADA buildings. The Ganesh Maidan was chosen as the site for design for numerous factors; some of them as discussed below:

SITE OBSERVATIONS

I was very much intrigued with the site conditions and how well people over there share spaces. The footpath wrapped around the ground did not act as a hard edge to separate the ground and the road edge. It blurred the inside out, something like a threshold. There was no baricading to any space, it all acted as one which enhanced to the free circulation of the area.

I tried taking up the idea of pockets which act as thresholds to hold the individual programmes we had to design for, which were:.

  1. Community Hall (for 80-100 People) inclusive of Shakha space and other kinds of recreation

  2. Temple and open precinct

  3. Convenience Stores (4-6 Nos.)

  4. Public Toilets & Drinking Water Facilities

  5. Vachanalay and library

  6. Vyayamshala / Gymkhana

  7. Stage and green room

  8. Pump Room

  9. Clinic with Nursing Home

  10. Plant Nursery

  11. Hawking Space

  12. Balwadi / Day Care Centre and Playground

Some iterations which I tried showcase the layout with an open space around which all other spaces happening around it. How can pockets be given to every programme so that it acts as a threshold between the enclosed space and the outdoor.

LAYOUT

After trying how the layout works for every programme in the Ganesh Maidan, below shown design drawings show the final stage of design.

DESIGN DETAILING

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

In this flip book, we tried to see step-by-step processing of our project: how the builtform happens from the existing site to project completion.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING

Here, we try to understand the duration of our project delivery and how the site facilities can be put up. The storage for materials needed, access routes and other such facilities take up space on site which need to be pre planned. The CPM Chart tells us about the activities involved in the project.

In this section we tried to do the costing part for our project according to design specifics. The BoQ has measurement diagrams which replicate some of the sections detailed in the BoQ.
