Landscape & Urbanism

Specialization, Sem III

The course focused on studying the ecology around the lake and how human interference with it changes the form of the lake. For the same we as a group had been to Udvada village in Gujarat for 4 days. We studied three lakes in total: Tighara lake, Sarodhi lake and Orvad lake. Various groups were appointed to study various aspects of these different lakes.

I was studying the Orvad lake. Our main intention was working with the hydrological relation of the lake with the sewage, waterflow throughout the village and how the garbage disposal affects the teachings of the soil. The maps and sections show how the underground pipeline system is worked out, the drainage flow from its source to its end and how the microclimate survives in all these conditions.

Along the process, we thought of how can this harmful human intervention be stopped for the long survival of the lake, do we need to guard the lake by high walls creating a clear boundary between the lake and people, but then that means cutting all the essential transactions the villagers depend on the lake for.

To study the lake, we thought through following questions:

1 .What are the future aspects of the settlement for water consumption?

2. What is the sewage treatment of each settlement and it's outlet?

3. How is water managed and utilized within the boundaries of the village to avoid wastage and sustain healthy environment?

We learnt how the sewage and garbage is treated within the boundaries and the long routes of the black water. How the chemical processes of all this affects the waterbody nearby and how all of that affects the lives that happen in and around the lake.
