Urban Street Design

Specialization, Sem V

The studio was conducted by Urban Centre Mumbai.

In this current course, we have reflected on the larger urban plan and the city vis-à-vis street network connectivity, and have honed in on street and footpath design as one element of an urban plan. The emphasis of the studio was on the design and delivery process of good quality city-scale pedestrian infrastructure (footpaths) for a local authority.

The urban street typology we as a group studied was pedestrian approach to Mahakali Caves at Andheri East as a heritage site. There were other groups too who focused other typologies on urban scale spread over the Mumbai city in Borivali, Kandivali, Mahim and Aarey Metro.

Our major problem on the site were inappropriate garbage dumping no way finding to the caves, no footpaths for pedestrians, encroachment by the chawl residents, no awareness of caves being a heritage site and no dedicated parking spots. We in our approach started seeing at ways how these issues can be delivered in accordance with the rules and regulations of BMC and heritage sites by ASI.

As an proper approach keeping in mind the local issues, we sought at providing footpath for pedestrians, a dedicated space for parking, appropriate signages for way finding at nearby railway stations and metros.

To deliver our approaches, we tried showcasing our design changes in the before-after format. Some of the changes we thought for the site are as below.

As a part of the study, we also published a book in collaboration with UCM & SEA which can be read below.
